What are the causes of chest fat?

Chest fat mainly results from too much body fat, sometimes due to genetics, a sedentary lifestyle, or by consuming unhealthy food regularly and failing to work out. This fat accumulates in different areas of the body, including the chest.

Chest fat can also be a symptom of a severe underlying condition, such as testicular cancer or pituitary gland disorders.

What are the causes of gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or men. It is mainly caused due to hormonal imbalance, where an excess of estrogen is produced in the body.

This condition affects not just adults but also teenage boys and babies. During puberty, teenage boys’ hormone imbalance causes gynecomastia, but this issue gets resolved when the hormone levels become stable.

Male babies can also get gynecomastia because estrogen passes through the mother’s placenta to the baby. This is temporary, and the issue disappears after a few weeks.

Common causes of chest fat and gynecomastia

It’s important to note that sometimes the causes of gynecomastia and chest fat can overlap and some men may have both gynecomastia and chest fat. Some common causes of gynecomastia and chest fat are:

  • Medications: Certain medications can cause weight gain, chest fat, and gynecomastia as side effects. Medications, such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, hormone therapy drugs(that treat conditions such as prostate cancer), anti-androgens, heart medications, and steroids, are bound to cause chest fat or gynecomastia as a side effect. However, not everyone who takes these medications experiences this, and the side effects vary from person to person.
  • Obesity: In general, an increase in the body’s overall fat ratio causes obesity. So, men tend to have chest fat. However, these fat cells in the body can convert testosterone into estrogen. Thus high production of estrogen causes the breast tissue to develop. Thus indirectly resulting in gynecomastia.
  • Genetic factors: Genetic factors can play a role in this hormonal imbalance, leading to the development of the condition. So, some men may be genetically predisposed to gynecomastia and chest fat.
  • Aging: This factor can cause both chest fat and gynecomastia. With age, men tend to experience hormonal imbalances, causing both these problems. In particular, metabolism slows down naturally with aging, thus making it more difficult to burn fat and maintain a healthy weight.

How to tell if you have chest fat or gynecomastia?

As mentioned above, although chest fat and gynecomastia may have overlapping causes, they are two different things and have different treatment options. It is important to know if you have chest fat or gynecomastia to get the correct treatment. Here are a few ways to check if you have chest fat or gynecomastia:

What does your chest look like?

Chest fat is more evenly distributed across the chest and may not have a distinct “breast” shape. In contrast, gynecomastia is more concentrated in the nipple area and may have a distinct “breast” shape.

How does the fat feel?

Chest fat on the breasts is soft and bulky, easily pinched or grabbed between the fingers.

Gynecomastia may appear firm, round, or dome-shaped on the chest area. But it can’t be squeezed, pinched, or grabbed between the fingers.

Does it respond to diet and exercise?

We know that chest fat is caused by excess fat in the body. Hence, it can be quickly cleared by changing your lifestyle with regular physical activities and a diet. So, chest fat responds well to diet and exercise.

Meanwhile, gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance of hormones or certain medical conditions, so it may not be improved with weight loss and exercise alone.

Do you find any nipple discharge?

If yes, it is a symptom of gynecomastia. This is because gynecomastia causes the breast tissue to enlarge, leading to milk or fluid production from the nipples. Also, the fluid can be yellow or clear, or cloudy.

Chest fat doesn’t cause any changes in breast tissue. So nipple discharge doesn’t occur.

How can chest fat be reduced?

By sticking to a diet that is low in saturated and transfat and adding more fruit, veggies, and lean proteins, you can reduce your overall body fat, and gradually your chest fat will reduce. Cardio exercises such as cycling, running, or swimming can greatly help burn calories and reduce overall body fat. Also try out push-ups, chest presses, and chest flies that can tone and sculpt the chest area.

In addition, incorporating weight training into your exercise routine can help build muscle and tone the chest.
Getting adequate sleep can also help you maintain a healthy weight and hormone balance.

Remember that everyone’s body is unique and that you must consult a doctor or a dietitian to get a plan that suits your body. Also, it’s essential to be patient, as changes in body shape take time and consistency.

How can gynecomastia be treated?

The safest and most effective way to treat gynecomastia is through gynecomastia surgery. Gynecomastia surgery or male breast reduction is a procedure that removes excess glandular tissue and fat from the breasts to give a more masculine chest contour. It may require surgical removal of extra tissue, liposuction, or both.

Male breast reduction surgery takes 1 to 3 hours to complete. The patient will be given sedation or general anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision in the chest area to remove the excess glandular tissue. If liposuction is being performed then the surgeon will make small incisions in the area to insert a cannula (a thin tube) and suction out the fat. The surgeon will then close the incisions with sutures.

Recovery time from male breast reduction surgery is usually between one and two weeks, during which time the patient should rest and restrict physical activity. After the recovery period, patients can usually return to their normal activities.
